As the Cider Storyteller at Blue Bee Cider, I have directed the launch and programming for the Cider Academy since January 2017. The goal of this program is to help consumers explore the world of artisanal cidermaking. Classes and workshops focus on agriculture/environment, cidermaking, history/culture, and tasting/sensory analysis. Topics include comparative cider tastings, chef dinners, specialty food pairings, cidermaking techniques, agricultural workshops, crafting projects, literary events, and cultural heritage panels. A number of events were produced in partnership with fellow Virginia producers of high-quality food and beverage products, agricultural growers, musicians, research and historical groups, and higher education institutions.
Examples of past events:
- Virginia Hopped Cider Festival workshops on hop-growing /industry standards and a guided tasting of 12 Virginia hopped ciders
- Gathered & Grown Dinner featuring Virginia ingredients with Fredericksburg restaurateur/chef Joy Crump (in association with the Fire, Flour & Fork Festival)
- Cider & Cheese Pairing Class w/ Truckle Cheesemongers and Essex St. Cheese Co.
